Transitioning Confidence Into Self-Worth

March 01, 20252 min read

In last month’s FNI blog, I discussed how fears prevent us from living to our highest potential. I also explained how fear can be so paralyzing that it prevents us from entertaining any ideas we may have about changing our life in terms of career, relationships, or launching the business.

Fear can occur when we begin to transition our thoughts from one perspective to another. Often our family and friends will question what we are doing. The response can be positive or negative.

As I have said in the past, when you begin to make changes, it often forces those around you to look at their own situation and question their lives. This can make people uncomfortable … some may even be angry. They may say things to you or behind your back. They may begin to see the changes taking place and ask, “who do you think you are?”

It's one thing to talk about your plans but once you begin to implement them and begin to walk in that truth, trouble begins. Opposition begins.

This opposition can be from the universe, friends, or family. Why would this happen? Because when you start to walk in your purpose, the negative forces take notice, and they do not like that.

I cannot tell you how many times I have had to confront this in my life – both personally and professionally. Trust me when I say, people will start to take notice.

They start chatting about it. You start to walk with confidence. Why shouldn’t you? When you enjoy what you do, you walk into your worth. You do this because you know the changes that are coming your way. You can feel it in your soul.

As nurses, we understand developing self-confidence, but do we understand self-worth?

Last year, a book was released by Jamie Kern Lima called Worthy. This book was written to address just that. If you follow Jamie, you know that she went from a Denny’s waitress to a multimillion-dollar business owner from her apartment.

Her story goes through the changes that took place for her. She had self-confidence, but her own self-worth needed to be addressed.

I will paraphrase this from the book; self-worth is the foundation of which you are built on. Self-worth is independent of what is happening on the outside. Self-confidence fluctuates based on circumstances that are external.

As we grow and evolve, we tend to stop looking at external factors to give us the confidence we once sought. It is when we learn to walk in faith over fear that we see what truly awaits us.
